Greyhound Pets of America/Daytona Beach (GPA/Daytona Beach) is a chapter of a national 501c(3) non-profit organization dedicated to finding responsible, loving homes for retired racing greyhounds. GPA/Daytona Beach maintains a kennel at the racing compound with
approximately 50 greyhounds available at all times. Greyhound pets are affordable to own, low maintenance, mellow in temperament, housebroken and easy to train. They are also friendly with other pets, eager to please and intelligent. The sponsors of GPA/Daytona Beach volunteer at various locations around the Daytona Beach area to raise awareness, introduce prospective families to their new pets and provide adoption as an option.
There is a $200 adoption fee. The fee covers:
- Spaying or neutering
- All current vaccinations
- Heartworm testing
- Worming for parasites
- Teeth cleaned
- Martingale collar, snap collar and leash
- Book: Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan
- GPA Identification Tag
- Kennel muzzle
- First month supply of Interceptor (heartworm medication)
- First month supply of Frontline
- Use of a crate for the first 30 days
- Handbook & starter package of Pro-Plan
Adoption Process
GPA/Daytona asks all potential adopters to complete an application. This helps GPA/Daytona match the adopter with the best pet for their lifestyle. Once GPA/Daytona receives the completed application, the adoption committee will call the potential adopter. The call helps the committee fully understand what the adopter is looking for in a companion. The adopter will then be presented with available greyhounds.
Once the pet is picked the adopter will have a home visit with an adoption coordinator and the greyhound. The home visit is time for the greyhound to see your home and to see how he/she reacts to the adopter's household. It is asked that everyone in the household be present for this visit.
The entire process for finding the right greyhound generally takes 2-4 weeks, depending on the requests given on the application. We ask that you be patient and wait for the right greyhound. Once adopted, you will agree that your greyhound was worth the wait.
Adoption Approvals
Although greyhounds make great house companions, they do not, like most dogs, fit into everyones lifestyle. GPA/Daytona is not able to approve every application. There are certain guidelines that must be met for the adoptions to be successful.
